The Film Education Symposium aims to maintain the Eastern European film research network, while also providing teachers with the opportunity to use film as a teaching resource in the classroom. During the symposium, we organize school screenings for pupils from all education cycles, a film education training dedicated to teaching staff and public events with the theme of film education.
Teacher training
The Balkan Film and Culture Festival - Taifas invites teachers from Timișoara, the county, and the surrounding area to a free training session facilitated by Isabelle Bourdon, Educational Coordinator at CinEd and Cinema, Cent Ans de Jeunesse, and Daniel Simeonov, film director and teacher from Arte Urbana Collective (Sofia, Bulgaria).
The purpose of the training is to encourage teachers to use film as a teaching resource in the classroom and to introduce useful methods and resources that can be adapted to school curricula. The main tool we propose is the CinEd platform and film collection.
CinEd – European Cinema Education for Youth is a strategic and structured film education program aimed at children and young adults in Europe aged 6 to 19, offering:
- a common digital platform with free access to watch (streaming) movies
- a collection of classic and contemporary European films
- a rich set of pedagogical materials
- training for teachers, educators, trainers and tutors
- public screenings followed by educational and creative activities for a young audience
ISABELLE BOURDON is a consultant at the Cinema and Audiovisual Department of the Académie de Créteil, Paris, and the educational coordinator for the film education projects CinEd - Cinema Education for Youth and Cinema, Cent ans de Jeunesse. During the training, Isabelle will present the CinEd platform, the film collection, and the available educational resources.
DANIEL SIMEONOV is a film director and English teacher in Dermantsi, Bulgaria. Since 2017, he has been using film in the classroom to support students in developing technical knowledge and socio-emotional skills. Daniel will lead two practical workshops and demonstrate exercises he uses in class.

Public events
Round Table
The round table invites teachers and educators from Timișoara and Timiș County to share their experiences and teaching strategies for integrating film into education. Best practice examples from European Projects and our project partners will be presented to provide a global perspective on how film can be effectively incorporated into the learning process.

Trauma has been a recurrent theme in cinema, reflecting its profound impact on human experiences. Filmmakers have delved into the intricate nature of trauma, exploring its origins, manifestations, and the complex journey toward healing. In the context of film education, cinema offers a platform to explore the historical context of collective trauma, the psychological nature of personal trauma and offers a critical lens to discuss societal norms, prejudices and systemic problems. At the same time, film in itself has a therapeutic potential. It can serve as a starting point for conversations about personal experience and it can foster empathy and understanding.
